Black Friday is just around the corner, and with some of the biggest sales in technology hitting the shops – both physical and virtual – here are Roller, we couldn’t wait to start predicting the discounts.
In its long history of retail, it’s unlikely Black Friday has ever been so prominent for Virtual Reality sales. With gadgets such as Oculus Rift Touch having dominated retail spaces over the past year, and games, filters and experiences of both virtual and augmented reality becoming increasingly popular throughout the seasons, it’s unsurprising that VR is set to be a significant placeholder in Black Friday sales.
Another seemingly predictable discount is the sale of Home Assistants such as Amazon Echo and Alexa. Hugely popular in both the UK and the US, the voice activated home devices were some of the biggest predicted trends of 2016, and have now amassed roughly 10 million sales worldwide – making these a reliable bet for Black Friday discounts.
With Christmas right around the corner, children’s technology retailers are set to be stocking up in time for Black Friday, with deals on hi-tech gadgets and stocking fillers already being advertised online. Global children’s retailers Toys R Us is already promoting their Early Access Black Friday sale, with Argos following suit in a scheduled two week technology sale. The parent market is becoming increasingly lucrative for Black Friday marketers, helping stores like these stay on top of their discounts.
Fashion and Beauty Predictions
More beauty brands than ever are joining in the craze of Black Friday, with the rise of beauty influencers and cruelty free brands making them one of this years predicted best sellers.
With restrictions on just how low these beauty companies can go on their Black Friday reductions, it’s likely that many companies will instead chose to offer Free Shipping instead of a price discount. Trying to tempt those buying in bulk from large retail stores such as Debenhams, House of Fraser and John Lewis, where beauty products will be purchased alongside fashion, homeware and electrical goods, free shipping will be an additional bonus to consumers getting ready for Christmas.
Branded Black Friday
With the original concept of Black Friday being somewhat of a mystery in marketing, many companies are already adapting it to their own brands, and making their own Black Friday interpretations. An interesting example of this brand hybridity has already emerged in Arket, who have transformed Black Friday in a Colour Week, where the 5 staple shades in their brand identity are being discounted for each day of the week. Blue Monday, Grey Tuesday, White Wednesday, Green Thursday and Black Friday allow the customer to grab some bargains of their favourite Arket shade in bulk for each day of the sale week – inspiring other brands to follow the trend come Friday.
Beauty Boxes Will Champion Above Individual Sales
The success of beauty advent calendars throughout November has already provided us with some insight into the success of boxed beauty, so it’s likely that subscription boxes such as Glossybox and Birchbox will triumph this Friday. Luxury gift sets, mix and match boxes and diverse bulk orders are more likely to raise a higher profit than individual items or collections, so with the push from retailers and the demand for giftable beauty orders, the boxes will be flying off the shelves!
Black Friday Trends
With the festive sales predictions looking bleaker than ever before, many stores are set to be running their sales for even longer, with Argos continuing their discounted period for two weeks past Black Friday itself. Early Access sales and Black Weeks are likely to become more of a regularity, with retailers determine to keep the floodgates open for as long as possible for maximum profit during this busy period.
More Online Purchases Than Ever Before
The Black Friday in-store sales of 2016 were expected to be huge. Extra security was hired, barriers set up, doors opened early with more staff on shift than ever. And rather embarrassingly, it was distinctly un-chaotic. The popularity of online shopping, click and collects and Prime delivery services means that the majority of Black Friday discounts will be purchased online, via office computers, phones on the tube and comfy laptops at home. Why endure the cold when your new bargain can be delivered straight to your house?
The Rise of Black Friday Travel
A seemingly forgotten sector of the Black Friday sales is the travel markets, with brands such as RyanAir, Travelodge and British Airways all likely to offer up sales and discounts on package holidays for 2018. The looming Brexit will also be affecting the popularity of travel discounts, with many people likely to be panic ordering package holidays within the EU before the UK’s separation next year.
The Stores To Watch
A national collection of Black Friday deals in almost every department, John Lewis looks promising for ticking off those discounted Christmas lists. With yearly on, and offline, sales in fashion, beauty, technology and home wear, the retailer is likely to be one of the first to begin an early access sale – so keep your eyes peeled!
Currys PC World
Another store likely to be heavy with discounted technology, Currys has already begun showcasing their sales on laptops, desktops and tablets, claiming to be reducing their Black Tag items to the ‘lowest prices ever’. Also promising ‘a prize with every purchase’, the tech giant is looking to reel customers in, no matter what how low the discount is.
Stringently targeting the early Christmas shoppers, Tesco is another big store to watch this Black Friday, with their in-store reductions covering everything from home goods, travel luggage, fashion and festive essentials, with their most popular Christmas tree being reduced by almost 50%. Having already released their traditional seasonal advert to confused criticism, the store will most definitely be hoping to boost pre-Christmas sales with this big Black Friday reduction!
