The Arrival of the Samsung Gear S2

Wearable technology and smartwatches seem to be everywhere at the minute, and last week (November 12th to be exact) marked the arrival of the Samsung Gear S2.

The much anticipated Gear S2 has been labelled as the first real rival of the Apple Watch and its easy to see why, because this latest smartwatch offering from Samsung is something really special, and here’s why…

It’s round…

And altogether very watch-like, which is great, and it also looks great on a wrist, which is another handy feature for a watch.

The round face isn’t just good looking though, the Bezel face makes navigating through the watches many apps and functions a breeze. Navigation is done by twisting the Bezel to scroll, zoom and pretty much everything else you could need to do. The watch is also touchscreen (of course), and has the classic ‘home’ and ‘back’ buttons.

It’s pretty powerful

This watch has some serious staying power, with a battery that lasts 36 hours from one charge, even with the screen on all the time. Impressive right?

Even when the battery is knackered it’ll only take 2 hours to reach full charge again, and that’s on it’s very handy wireless charger.

It’s Tizen powered

Some people love it, some people hate it, but there’s no denying it’s different.

For developers, and those wanting to create an app for the Gear S2, Tizen offers a new range of features. Enhanced standalone Gear apps could work with network, call and location-based APIs with web and native apps running with both web and native app SDKs, meaning you can have a fast, light-weight app on the very latest smartwatch technology.

The new platform is sleek and intuitive when compared with other wearable operating systems, but long time users of Android Wear might find they end up missing the old system.

It can keep you healthy

As with pretty much every wearable out there, there’s an mHealth focus.

In this case its the integration of Samsung’s much loved S Health. S Health allows users to track daily activities, log their exercises, step count, heart rate and even track their caffeine vs. water intake. Giving a rounded look into your health, right from your wrist.

The Samsung Gear S2 Roundup

Overall, we absolutely love this smartwatch.

Priced at £249 for the Gear S2 and £299 for the Gear S2 Classic, this smartwatch is one of the best on the market. With great specs, great new features and functions for apps, and its Bezel face with Tizen OS combo, the Gear S2 is exactly what a smartwatch should be.
